Fashion in the 90’s was defined by a mix of styles; from grungy flannel shirts and Doc Martens to slip dresses layered with a t-shirt and denim vests. We were obsessed with the styles worn by Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore and Sarah Jessica Parker. You just can’t talk about how great the 90’s were without giving props to the trends that were popular back then. And how lucky we are that some of those trends are getting some attention again! I found a new found love for a few accessories that have been resurrected from a time that I knew well:
Fanny Packs
My friends and I all had a fanny pack. They certainly weren’t stylish, in fact they were downright uncool. When I think of fanny packs I think of travel, concerts and Disney trips. I hated wearing it but it sure was practical. It was something we used to throw our keys in along with strawberry lip-gloss and a disposable camera easily walking around hands free. It was completely unflattering. I actually forgot about them until I started seeing them everywhere this past month in fashion. These new bags are nothing like my old black Jansport, they are stylish, sophisticated and polished. Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Prada have all jumped on the bandwagon. Not only are they still worn around the waist now, known as a belt bag, but also can be slung over the shoulder as seen lately on Kendall Jenner.
My old Jansport!
Jellies
So with everything plastic this year from boots, to jackets, belts to hats, I wonder “Where are my long lost Jellies? The ones I always brought down the shore with me on summer vacations! My girlfriends and I thought we were so cute in these silly waterproof shoes walking the boardwalk at the shore! Created in the late eighties by a British Company called JuJu (same company who makes the popular rain boots “Wellies”) these colorful shoes actually never went away. But this year they’re kind of “all grown up”! With the new silhouettes this spring, you can still feel like an adult but with a touch of feeling like a kid again! And believe it or not, they are super comfy! They come in sandals, heels, and the original look with the buckle. I have heard they are using better plastic now so hopefully, as I remember, they won’t smell when opening the box!

Cat-Eye Frames
Sunglasses are a must-have accessory that every woman has in their wardrobe. Even though, as some fans complain, the small frame isn’t really big enough to give you the best sun protection, there’s a certain appeal to 90s sunglasses frames that will not leave you feeling indifferent. Today, we’re seeing those retro cat eye frames feature pointer edges and smaller lenses, as well as decorated with embellishment. Many lenses will boast a rainbow of colors! This trend took off thanks to three of the most influential fashion models of the moment: celebrity best friends Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner and Gigi’s younger sister Bella. Ever since the trio started sporting them, it seems everyone else is becoming obsessed!
My old favorites!
Chokers
When we talk about the 90s, how can we forget the jewelry! Impossible! I’m talking chokers! There were tattoo chokers, stretchy chokers, smiley face pendant chokers, and velvet satin ribbon chokers. I think Drew Barrymore wore the choker best! The girls on “Friends” were always sporting these too. Layering jewelry was also big in the 90’s. I know chokers are nothing new to us, but we will start seeing them more in a layered look. Multilayered necklaces or a pearl collar necklace paired with a choker, long chain necklaces stacked together and mood ring pendants. Just a little bit more of a complicated version of what we know, we’re seeing them both on the runways and celebrities. I’ve always loved 90’s inspired jewelry and I’m guilty of wearing all of the above!
